How Age Has Been Represtented in Single Father

Age is represented differently during Single Father, which has a range of different ages. Whilst watching the first episode of Single Father we meet a hand full of middle aged adults, one grown up daughter form a previous marriage, a teen daughter who is one of the main characters throughout the rest of Single Father, and three young children, all of which who are in Junior school. We know they are in Junior school because we see them being dropped of all together at one school.
The use of camera angles is a large indication of whether a person is old or young. For example the youngest daughter is not tall, as she is around the age of about seven, therefore the camera angles used on her tend to be high angle shots, where the camera is placed above the person looking down at the action. This implies her being small and of a young age. In the first 30 seconds of the first episode we a shown a two shot of her playing with her mother in the doorway, which uses a slight high angle shot and the mother is sitting down whilst the girl is standing up. These camera shots are also used for the two boys who are young as well. An example is when they are both leaving to go to school and another slight high angle shot is used. The reason fro using such a typical high angle shot on the children may be because this would also imply that they aren't import and down below the adults, so instead the director (Sam Miller) uses on slight change in angle because the main focus still needs to be the children as they play an important role throughout the entire series of Single Father. Another type of shot used to help show clearly the difference in age is a two shot which shows two characters in the frame and is usually cut together with close ups. A two shot is used when Lucy, the younger teen goes to wish her mother good luck in her exam. The two shots helps us to see clearly that Lucy is obviously of a younger age to her mother by being in one frame which shows clearly the age difference between two people.
The sounds which are used both in the foreground and background helps to represent different ages in Single Father. Sounds used when the children of young ages are in the background are usual screaming and shouting and generally playing with it each other, or calling at there parents for attention. However the sound used when the older teen is working with her father is the sound of music coming from her iPod, this is different to that of a young child because they would not be listening to an iPod, whereas stereotypically teenagers are always listening to their music and iPods etc. We are also shown the younger teen listening to music at some point throughout Single Father. When the younger children are in the playground the sounds used then are children playing, similar to when the children are in the background when they are in their home. When adults are talking without anyone else there, the background sound is usually more toned down and natural. For example when they are outside you hear the faint sound of traffic and birds singing etc. This gives the effect of adults being older in age and therefore more mature and calm in what they do. Therefore, this shows younger ages to be more excitable and energetic than an older person.
The Mise-en-Scene represents older and younger people in different ways and helps to represent this. The teen daughter is shown to be a teen because she wears a secondary school uniform with a blazer, shirt and tie. The younger children are shown to be young due to there costume of a coat and school trousers and shoes, showing they are still dressed by the parents rather than choosing their own style yet. The young children are shown as a young age when they are getting all excitable around their father asking which DVD they can watch, and whether they are old enough to watch them etc. Also the children being in a school playground is a large representation that they are of a young age.We know the children are young aged because they have to be told to do everything and are responsible to do certain things. An example is when they are misbehaving for their mother, and then the father steps in and tells them to go and tidy their bedrooms, which is usually what you are told when you are young. On the other hand, we know that the fathers daughter, the older teen, form a previous marriage is of a much older age in comparison, because she is working and has a child of her own. The middle aged adult act in a more responsible way, they do all the jobs which children would struggle doing, such as putting up the tent in their back garden and also cooking for everyone. The adults are dressed in a much older way compared to the children, which makes us as the viewer realise that they are much older in age.
The editing used does not particularly help to show any contrast in age between the children and the adults. However the editing which can see has been used during Single Father is continuity editing which shows a sense of reality and shows time changing. Cross Cutting, where the editing technique of alternating, interweaving, or interspersing one narrative action with another. Other editing skills used which we can see are also eye-line match which is when it cuts from one character to whatever they may be looking at, and also linear narrative in some way, because after the event of the mother being run over, it does use a style of story telling which shows the events happening chronologically.

How Gay People Are Represented Withinn TV Dramas

Gay men/women are represented all in a similar way in different dramas. They are represented with the use of the 4 technical codes which are mise-en-scene, camera, editing and sound.
Usually the gay characters are represented as we would stereotypically imagine them to be like. For men this would be wearing make-up, wearing female clothes and being bitchy. Whereas, for the gay women it is quite the opposite with men's shirts, baggy trousers and short hair.
TV Dramas always represent the gay person to feel that they are uncomfortable with their sexuality and feel it s wrong, unless they are a character who came into the dram being openly gay. For example Christian in Eastenders is known for being gay and everyone else around knows it, whereas Syed is not openly gay and tries to tell himself he is not gay and hide it from Christian and his family.
The mise-en-scene for gay people in dramas is usually in bars and clubs. However the mise-en-scene for a gay person is also typically the same of that of a straight person. This could be at home, or at work, or even simply walking along the street. For example, Syed works with his parents in a curry factory and he goes to the pub and also goes out to R&R, the local club. He appears in the setting of his family home often aswell. Also another character Christian does really seem to have an obvious job, although he does walk the streets like a normal person and shoots scenes in his home, mainly the living area. He too goes to R&R like Syed. Sophie out of Corination Street is a gay female who is yet to become open about her sexuality, she too does not have a vastly different mise-en-scene to that of a straight actor in Corination Street.
The Sounds which are used in the scenes of Syed, Christian and Sophie are not different to that of a straight person. The sounds which are used a usually general background noises, for example if they were in the street the background noises used may be birds, cars, people shouting, whereas if they were indoors you may hear a television or people talking etc.
The camera shots used to represent the 3 gay characters would be mainly close ups, showing just the head and shoulders, medium shot showing their body down to their waist, medium long shots which goes down to the knees and also long shots, which fit the whole body into a frame. These are evenly used for Sophie and Syed, however i think that the medium long shot is used slightly more on Christian due to him having a muscular physique which shows off another stereotype characteristic for a gay man.
The editing used to represent the gay characters include continuity editing, which shows reality and time moving forward, cross cutting which alters, interweaves or intersperses on narrative action with another, usually in different locations or places. Editing also used includes eye-line match which is a type of editing which cuts from one character to what they have been looking at, and also linear narrative which is a style of storytelling in which events happen chronologically.
In conclusion a gay man/women is not shown any differently using the 4 technical codes than to a straight person, this could be to show that they aren't really that different to a straight person apart from their sexuality. Gay people are only shown to be gay within a TV Drama due to the way they look or act and what sort of clothes they wear etc.

Love Actually Synopsis

The film which I am going to create a synopsis for is Love Actually, a teen orientated romantic comedy. Love Actually is set almost entirely in London, within the five weeks before Christmas. It tells the story of different relationships and many various people’s love lives, or lack of them. The main character in the film is David, who is the new bachelor prime minister. David has feelings for his new personal assistant Natalie, and is unable to express them. A relationship between John and Judy who are a pair of movie stand-ins grow closer after their love scenes.  We then meet David’s older sister who is called Karen. Karen comes to realise that her husband, named Harry, is flirting with an office worker named Mia. Karen has a friend called Daniel, a widowed writer who has an eleven year old son, his son asks for advice on a girl he fancies. Attention is then turned to Jamie who is another writer who has leaves his girlfriend due to her cheating on him. Jamie then travels to France whilst writing a novel. He finds a possible romance with his Portuguese maid Aurelia, who cannot speak English fluently. Meanwhile another romance is blossoming between Harry’s American secretary Sarah and office worker Karl; however this does not happen due to her own family problems. The main link between all the love stories in Love Actually is Billy Mack, a burned out former rock star.

Challanges Involved in Film Making.

There can be many challenges when attempting to create a film, trying to appropriately use the correct types of camera shots and angles. Experience can become a challenge if you have little of it. The more and more you create films, the more experience you will be taking on board. However, if you have little experience this will result in a film which is not of high quality. Another challenge which may be crossed when film making is confidence. If you don't believe that the film you are making is going to be very good, then that is most likely what it will be; not very good. On the other hand, if you are full of confidence and feel that you are going to produce a high quality film then this will probably be the case. For example, having confidence when acting or using the camera, and testing out various shots, will help the overall quality of the produced film. i believe that one of the most important challenges is preperation time, i think this because without preparing the film there is no point in attempting to even produce the film. Preperation icludes preparing every aspect of a production; setting, lighting, camera shots, actors, scripts etc. Getting the timing right when preparing for filming is important because if you dont organise setting before the date of starting to film, then you would end up with nowhere to film, the same applies for the actors; if you dont manage to find any in the space of time set, there will be no production at all.

Homework - Watch a Film.

1. Chosen Film: Finding Nemo

2. Binary Oppositions:
Througout the film we see various binary opposition, one of the most obvious is Marlin (Nemo's Dad) vs the big wide oceanand all the danger that may be closer than he thinks, when he has to go and try to find and rescue his only child Nemo.
Another binary opposition is Fish vs Sharks, which makes a few appearance througout the film where three sharks are met; Bruce, Anchor and Chum, who claim to not eat fish, however at one point Bruce loses it and try to eat Marlin.
At one point Nemo vs "The Tank Gang", this is when Nemo first gets placed into P.Sherman (A Dentist) fish tank.

3. The equilibrium of Nemo starting his first day at school is disrupted when the school of fish go to the edge of the reef. Nemo is picked on by the other fish for having a little fin, who are seeing who can swim the closest to the fishing boat. However, Nemo is having none of it and proves them wrong by swimming all the way to the boat, touching it, and swimming all the way back. On the way back Nemo bumps into a couple of scuba divers who captures him and takes him away!

This is where the search for "Finding Nemo" begins.

4. The elixir which helps to return everything back to normal starts when they find the address of where Nemo has been taken to:

P.Sherman,
42 Wallaby Way,
Sydney

This encourages Nemo's dad to search for him. Another elixir is when word of what has happened is passed around the ocean about the tragic event, this then encourages all those who found out, to help Marlin. They work as a team to guide Marlin and his friend Dora in the right direction for the location of Nemo. "The Tank Gang" help Nemo to escape the tank he has been put in, and he returns to the ocean, where eventually he meets back up with his dad and they head back to their sea anemone at home!

Homework Lesson 1

Production Skills Audit

1. I dont have a lot of expierience using a video camera. However, i do understand the basics and how to work one.

2. I have used Windows Live Movie Maker recently and have found it easy to use and am good at using this software.

3. I am able to work in groups quite well if I feel comfortable with the people I am with, otherwise I dont make as much input into discussions.

4. On a scale of 1-10 I would say about 6. I think this because there are many aspects to take into consideration, this may be camera angle, distance, lighting, and also finding the right locations to make the opening of your film perfect.

Narrattive and Story Analysis
Film Chosen: Toy Story 3

1.  The main story types that could be applied to Toy Story 3 are, Adventure, Action and Comedy.

2.

3.

4. The hero in Toy Story 3, I would consider to be "The Aliens". This is due to them saving Andy's Toys from being killed in a recycling machine, using a large Claw.

5. Throughout the film there are a couple of villians, but the main one would have to be "Lots-o-Huggin' Bear". I think this because he is the one who puts Andy's Toys in a life or death situation, leading them to almost being burnt alive and killed!

6.
